Our Story

On April 15, 2013, Gillian Reny stood at the Boston Marathon finish line with her parents, Steven and Audrey, waiting for her sister Danielle to complete the historic race. A beautiful Marathon Monday was turned into a senseless tragedy when two bombs went off, and Gillian became one of 39 critically injured patients rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Despite suffering traumatic injuries, clinicians were able to save Gillian’s life and legs through the efforts of a multidisciplinary medical team.

A Mission Takes Root

During Gillian’s recovery, the Reny family learned firsthand that trauma is a silent, unrecognized epidemic that is critically underfunded. In 2014, with this newfound knowledge and deep gratitude to Gillian’s team of healthcare heroes, the Reny family established what is now known as The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Today, the center is thriving and has expanded its programs institutionally to Mass General Brigham and beyond. To ensure that no one else has to experience a traumatic injury like Gillian, the Stepping Strong Center catalyzes multidisciplinary collaborations and fuels innovations to improve outcomes from traumatic injuries.

While my family would undo April 15, 2013, in a heartbeat, we’re deeply grateful for the impact that has grown from that day. It’s hard to believe it’s been more than ten years since we launched the Stepping Strong Center in Gillian’s name, and incredible to see how it’s become a place where trauma research, care, and innovation thrive every day.

Looking Ahead

In the next decade, the Stepping Strong Center aspires to fulfill its mission by transforming the outcome of trauma through fostering novel solutions to prevent injury and driving innovative treatment and recovery practices for survivors.

  • Fuel research with an accelerated implementation timeline to maximize impact in the lives of trauma patients
  • Expand our emergency response training program to other industries and implement public access stations across Boston to provide bystanders with the necessary tools to respond in the event of a traumatic injury
  • Enhance the public’s understanding of trauma to advance strategies for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of traumatic injury
  • Support additional patient-focused programs to improve outcomes for those who have survived a traumatic injury

It’s an ambitious task, but we’re confident that with collective effort through multidisciplinary collaborations, we can change the field of trauma and how we serve trauma survivors for the better.
