Our Fellowship Programs

Prevention

The Stepping Strong Injury Prevention Fellowship builds on The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation’s dedication to interdisciplinary, collaborative research, offering early-career investigators the opportunity to explore social science and public health principles while working to minimize traumatic injuries in Boston and beyond. Under the direction of Molly Jarman, PhD, MPH, fellows will deepen their understanding of trauma systems, lead research projects, and refine their analytical skills. This fellowship trains the next generation of trauma leaders in injury prevention, enabling them to share this knowledge with peers at institutions worldwide.

Treatment

The Stepping Strong Trauma and Hand Fellowship is a comprehensive educational program focused on treating traumatic upper limb injuries, with an emphasis on reconstructive microsurgery and salvage following oncologic resection. Fellows receive specialized training in hand surgery, preparing them to treat traumatic injuries and complex conditions such as total arthritis, peripheral nerve damage, wrist salvage, and arthroscopic procedures. Under the direction of Christian E. Sampson, MD, fellows train alongside leading surgeons and researchers, collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues in trauma, orthopedic, vascular, plastic surgery, and more. This fellowship equips early-stage surgeons with innovative care approaches, building their confidence to transform lives with cutting-edge solutions.

Recovery

The Stepping Strong Amputation Recovery Fellowship is a first-of-its-kind opportunity that combines civilian and military clinical and research expertise from Mass General Brigham and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Under the direction of David Crandell, MD, the inaugural fellow collaborated with specialists in physiatry, plastic surgery, orthopedic trauma, ortho-oncology, and wound care to redefine limb loss restoration and long-term rehabilitation. This fellowship fosters connections with leading recovery experts and institutions, providing the fellow with the resources to revolutionize the field of amputation and recovery medicine.

In addition to receiving invaluable advice on how to approach a career in academic surgery, I have broadened my perspective on trauma systems, learned how to develop research projects, and refined my skills in research methodology for health services. I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity through the Stepping Strong Center.
