The Stepping Strong Innovator Awards program inspires multi-institutional faculty to pursue groundbreaking innovation with a goal of transforming outcomes for civilians and military heroes worldwide.

The Stepping Strong Injury Prevention and Intervention program aims to reduce the number and severity of traumatic injuries resulting from elderly falls, gun violence, distracted driving, and substance use.

True to the Boston Strong spirit of kindness and collaboration, the members of the Stepping Strong community are inspired to come together to help those with traumatic injuries step strong again.

As COVID-19 swept across the world, health systems were significantly impacted, especially in the field of trauma. The pandemic resulted in fewer hospital admissions for traumatic injuries and in recognition of this data, the Stepping Strong Center supported a one-time Stepping Strong COVID Award for a research team with a novel idea to combat this global crisis.

Stepping Strong COVID Award recipients Nitin Joshi, PhD, and Jeff Karp, PhD, developed a nasal spray to protect against a wide range of respiratory pathogens. After administering a single dose of the spray to animal models, the research team found that infection from the influenza virus was reduced by >99.99%. Although more research is needed in human models, if proven effective, the nasal spray can have a significant impact in reducing a variety of respiratory illnesses.

The Profi nasal spray is now commercially available and can be purchased at profispray.com. Learn more about this research by clicking the link in our bio.

Today is #ConcussionAwarenessDay

According to the @cdcgov, every day in the United States between 2020-2021, 190 people died from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and nearly 600 people were hospitalized. Despite this staggering data, TBIs and their long-term effects are preventable.

Click the link in our bio to learn more about TBIs and how you can join the @bia_usa initiative, “I’m Starting the Conversation”.

Earlier this year, the Stepping Strong Center awarded Colette Cywes-Bentley, PhD, a Stepping Strong Innovator Award for her discovery of polysaccharide accumulation in the brain after TBI, indicating the need for a treatment to combat chronic inflammation. Read more about this innovative work and Dr. Cywes-Bentley’s goals by visiting BWHSteppingStrong.org.
